The State Grid Corporation of China & UTC Training and Testing Center was established on Sept 6, 2017, by the China Electric Power Research Institute and the UTC with the aim of cultivating 10,000 professional UAV power line inspectors in three years and lifting power line inspection to the next level.

According to its operation and inspection department, the State Grid Corporation of China has 2000 UAVs of different types for conducting inspections for up to 200,000 utility poles in the last two years. As UAV applications grow at a rapid pace in the power industry, we have seen a huge demand for professional UAV operators.

The State Grid Corporation of China didn’t have any UAV trainings or assessment standards for operators until it cooperated with the UTC. Their collaborative facility will focus on conducting UAV trainings in the power industry and establishing assessment standards for instructors and students.

Inspectors of the State Grid Corporation of China can choose a training center nearest to them in the near future. After training, they can take exams at the SGCC UHV AC Test Base in Wuhan to earn a UTC Unmanned Aerial System Operator Certificate.

The State Grid Corporation of China’s construction and operation of power networks covers 26 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, covering over 88% of China, which creates a high demand to inspect power lines on a daily basis. As a new inspection tool, UAVs provide the SGCC with increased work productivity and enhanced inspection safety. The UAV testing center will further increase inspectors’ understandings of UAVs and play an important role in increasing inspection efficiency, reducing risks and ensuring national electrical network safety.
